Their story started on an early morning in December 2019 when Matthew messaged Emelia. For months, they'd talked to one other but were unable to meet up since covid kept them apart. In the summer of 2020, after six months of just texting, they went on their first date. Matthew asked Emelia to be his girlfriend on September 6th.

Six months later, Matthew left to attend boot camp to become a marine. While he was away, they wrote letters to each other when they could. After he returned, he went to Rhode Island for tech school. As Emelia was in Connecticut for college, they were able to visit each other. They grew into being adults on their own as Emelia went through college and Matthew continued his military career in Japan.

Despite the distance between them, their relationship and love for one another continued to blossom and grow over the next 5 years. Finally, on June 9th, 2025, while in Japan together, Matthew proposed to Emelia
